Coping with Kent ST.
Today I took a early cruise to the ole local park 'Kent ST'.
This park is legit slap bang in the middle of the ghetto, I'm not joking everything from full park brawls to drug deals and of course surrounded with police chases. Nothing out of the ordinary if you're a local park rat.
12 years is a guess at how long i've been going to this park, shit I learnt everything here including life skills not just skateboarding tricks. The hub for every friend I have almost, summer after summer spent burning here eating melting ice pops and drinking warm stubby beers then as winter came the lights would be on till around 10pm, we would all wrap up with stupid layers and still skate looking like eskimos!
We love to hate the place after all these years, its terrible the floor is uneven / rough the coping sticks out and of course its rite next to a football pitch... I've seen more you've been framed clips happen at Kent st then anywhere in the world.
The two guys I was joined by today are also very much park rat locals, who still like myself manage to ride this palace with a smile on our faces. I guess its the sociable factor of being able to laugh an joke about how shit the place is but how stoked you're on getting a trick still, I don't know its magical for sure. Again this place has been a grounding for influences in my work.
I just love character, above everything else you know? We might be gritty, dirty kids but we've grown to learn from our surroundings especially when this is all we had. Sure as hell I am thankful for Kent st and everything its done for me.
Anyways if you're ever around the Freeman st area take a little detour and have a walk or drive by Kent st skatepark, maybe sit and watch or try to picture growing up there.
Cheers Kent St.
